How to add personality to your bathroom

So you want to renovate your dingy little bathroom? You gotta keep it “light and bright” to make it feel bigger and modern right - or so all the advice on the internet says!

But if you’re anything like me, clean white minimalism just feels boring and same same!

Good news is you can have a bathroom that’s fresh and feels spacious while incorporating lots of personality! Here are my go-to top tips for having a light and bright bathroom that’s still “very you”.

Use a feature tile

Tile shopping for your renovation can be one of the most exciting stages! There are literally endless colours, sizes and style options to choose from. Then you can consider a traditional horizontal subway lay, or a kitkat stack or a classy herringbone pattern.

Encaustic tiles with gorgeous patterns can be an excellent source of interest without overwhelming your small space. Choose muted or soft colours in a design that makes your heart happy!

A feature tile looks great either along one wall or as a floor tile. Patterned and coloured tiles keep a bathroom from looking flat and lifeless. In a slightly bigger space, you could use up to three contrasting tiles. Mix up the size, pattern and colour to make each one stand out.

Be mindful not to overload the bathroom with your feature tile. Keep the other tiled surfaces neutral or white, add in large mirrors to bounce light around. We like to introduce warm tones in the vanity cabinetry to soften what can often be a cold, hard space. Laminate timber is a popular and resilient material for wet spaces.

Add pops of colour

From a neutral or soft toned base, you can layer in coloured elements that you are magnetically drawn to. Maybe you’re into patterned towels in a pair of bold colours, or you let little pieces of art do the talking.

The important thing here is to understand your sense of style and self in a deep way. If you know you’re easily distracted by trending colour palettes, then accessorise however you like but keep your permanent fixtures timeless and neutral.

Chrome taps and hardware are an evergreen choice and you can mix up your styling with bath towels and little accessories, so changing your style is generally inexpensive and quick!

However, if you’ve been committed to a certain aesthetic for decades and you’re not easily swayed by transient trends, then you could go big in your bathroom!

Select a wow factor mirror, or add waterproof wallpaper and funky cabinet handles.

For our family-home renovation, we went with a modern Hamptons aesthetic. Refreshing blues, subtle yet interesting encaustic tiles and timeless fixtures brought my vision to life!

No matter how much or how little personality you want to inject, your bathroom is a great place to have some fun and express yourself.
